PHNOM PENH – Villagers and fishermen on Tonle Sap experience a combined loss of more than 70 man-hours each day untangling plastic waste and old fishing nets from propellers, according to new research.
The “Propeller Project” study was conducted in collaboration with the NGO2 Bamboo Shoot Foundation, Ocean Recovery Alliance and Angkor University.
Covering floating communities of Kampong Phluk, Kampong Khleang, Mechrey and Chongkneas, it aims to raise awareness and better understand cost of downtime when boat propellers get tangled.
Nearly 650 fishermen and villagers who operate boats on Tonle Sap Lake and its canals for fishing, tourism, transport and commerce reported losing more than 70 man-hours each day untangling their propellers.
